Bush (and Cheney) Saw Repeated Warnings According to the 9/11 commission, Bush and Cheney saw a stream of alarming reports on al Qaeda's intentions long before the PDB of 6-August-2001. So Bush's top national security team, according to declassified information released yesterday by the commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. In April and May 2001, for example, among the intelligence reports were "Bin Laden planning multiple operations," "Bin Laden network's plans advancing" and "Bin Laden threats are real." Intelligence included reports of a hostage plot against Americans (noting that terrorists might choose to hijack an aircraft or storm a U.S. embassy). The CIA "consistently described the upcoming attacks as occurring on a catastrophic level, indicating that they would cause the world to be in turmoil," according to one of two staff reports released yesterday. Reports similar to these were made available to President Bush in the morning meetings with CIA Director George Tenet. Meanwhile the commission gave John Ashcroft a virtual pass yesterday in public, while clearly outlining the lack of concern Ashcroft had for counter-terrorism issues prior to 9/11. George Bush gave a meandering uninformative preamble to a dull and unispired press conference last night. Once again, the president avoided answering questions and the lap-dog press failed to press him. He'll no doubt receive rave reviews and a bump in the polls.
