Happy PDB Day! Yes, it was four years ago today that our fearless leader was brought the famous "Bin Laden determined to strike in US" memo. Of course, Bush was determined to clear brush and play golf, and thus scarcely a month later, "everything changed." Of course, that was a different world we lived in back then. I mean, back then, Bush was in the midst of one of the longest vacations ever taken by a sitting president. And what was there to worry about, really? January 31, 2001 Former Sen. Gary Hart, co-chairman of a bipartisan terrorism commission, warns that America is vulnerable to a weapon of mass destruction in a high-rise building. June 22, 2001 CIA Director George Tenet is reportedly nearly frantic about the possibility of an al-Qaeda attack. June 22, 2001 The Federal Aviation Administration issues five warnings to airlines about impending threats. June 28, 2001 Bush's National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice is warned in an intelligence report: It is highly likely that a significant al-Qaeda attack is in the near future, within several weeks. July 5, 2001 White House officials are informed that something really spectacular is going to happen here, and it is going to happen soon. July 10, 2001 In a memo to Washington that mentions bin Laden, an FBI special agent in Phoenix warns that a large number of Arabs are seeking flight training in the United States. And then came the August 6 PDB. The rest, of course, is history. I will never forget the image of our fearless leader in that classroom on the morning of September 11. Looking like a brave deer, courageously staring down an oncoming semi. Now of course, it's 2005. There are more than 1,800 dead American soldiers - thousands maimed - and tens of thousands of dead Iraqis. Osama is alive and well. Bush, of course, is bravely attending to a 5 week August vacation. This is his 50th vacation trip to Crawford Texas in his five years as president. Nero had nothing on this guy.
