The 'F' Word This is part of a definition of fascism, which I just came across. See if it reminds you of anybody: The Fascists were viciously anti-Communist and anti- liberal and, once in power, relied on an authoritarian state apparatus. They also used emotive slogans and old prejudices (for example, against the Jews) to bolster the leader's strongman appeal. Of course, feel free to substitute terrorist for communist, and Muslims for Jews.

Iraq - Friend or Enemy? What with the ever-changing situation in Iraq, many Americans are confused. I mean, are we supposed to like the Iraqis or hate them? How can we tell which side to root for? Well, here's the deal: they were our friends when they were using our weapons against Iran (who were our friends after we installed the Shah, but our enemies when they took the hostages, but our friends when we sold them arms and gave the money to the Contras, who were terrorist insurgents, but they were 'anti-communist,' so they were our friends). But then they (the Iraqis, that is) were our enemies when they invaded Kuwait – who were our friends, like the Saudis, because they are a democra…, well, never mind them for now - (after we said, "we don't get involved in intra-Arab squabbles," wink-wink, nudge-nudge), but our friends when we said "go ahead and overthrow Saddam, we've got your back" (wink-wink, nudge-nudge- you'd think they'd quit falling for that one). But then they were our enemies when they had those nasty old weapons of mass destruction, but then they were our friends again when we had to go in and liberate them from that terrible tyrant, Saddam. And now that they're trying to blow us (and anybody that works with us, or is even in the near vicinity of us) up every chance they get, they're our enemies again. Except they're our friends, too, I guess, 'cuz we can't just pull out our troops now, can we? It's really quite simple.

Happy PDB Day! Yes, it was four years ago today that our fearless leader was brought the famous "Bin Laden determined to strike in US" memo. Of course, Bush was determined to clear brush and play golf, and thus scarcely a month later, "everything changed." Of course, that was a different world we lived in back then. I mean, back then, Bush was in the midst of one of the longest vacations ever taken by a sitting president. And what was there to worry about, really? January 31, 2001 Former Sen. Gary Hart, co-chairman of a bipartisan terrorism commission, warns that America is vulnerable to a weapon of mass destruction in a high-rise building. June 22, 2001 CIA Director George Tenet is reportedly nearly frantic about the possibility of an al-Qaeda attack. June 22, 2001 The Federal Aviation Administration issues five warnings to airlines about impending threats. June 28, 2001 Bush's National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice is warned in an intelligence report: It is highly likely that a significant al-Qaeda attack is in the near future, within several weeks. July 5, 2001 White House officials are informed that something really spectacular is going to happen here, and it is going to happen soon. July 10, 2001 In a memo to Washington that mentions bin Laden, an FBI special agent in Phoenix warns that a large number of Arabs are seeking flight training in the United States. And then came the August 6 PDB. The rest, of course, is history. I will never forget the image of our fearless leader in that classroom on the morning of September 11. Looking like a brave deer, courageously staring down an oncoming semi. Now of course, it's 2005. There are more than 1,800 dead American soldiers - thousands maimed - and tens of thousands of dead Iraqis. Osama is alive and well. Bush, of course, is bravely attending to a 5 week August vacation. This is his 50th vacation trip to Crawford Texas in his five years as president. Nero had nothing on this guy.
